Important Update: New Rules for Booking Your Driving Test

The DVSA is introducing new rules to streamline the booking process and reduce wait times - including important changes to test rebooking.

If you’re currently learning to drive or planning to book your practical test soon, take note! The DVSA is introducing new rules to help streamline the booking process and reduce wait times.

Starting March 31, 2026, the rules for managing and changing driving test appointments are becoming much stricter. Here is everything you need to know to make sure you don’t lose your slot.

What is Changing?

Currently, learners (and instructors) can reschedule a test up to six times. To encourage people only to book when they are truly “test-ready,” this is being significantly reduced.

  • The New Limit: You will only be able to change your car driving test a maximum of 2 times.
  • Effective Date: 31 March 2026.
  • The “Reset”: If you already have a test booked before this date, your “change counter” will reset to zero on March 31. This means everyone starts with 2 fresh changes available, regardless of how many times you’ve moved it in the past.

What Counts as a ‘Change’?

The DVSA defines a change as any modification to your existing booking, including:

  1. Date or Time: Moving your test to a different day or hour.
  2. Test Centre: Switching your test location to a different town or city.
  3. Learner Swaps: (For instructors) Swapping a test slot between two different pupils.

Pro Tip: If you change the date and the test centre at the exact same time, it only counts as one change.

Why the Change?

These new measures are designed to stop “slot hoarding” and ensure that the dates shown on the booking system are available for people who are genuinely ready to take their test. By limiting the number of times a test can be moved, the DVSA hopes to increase the number of available slots for everyone.

My Advice to You

As your instructor, my goal is to get you a “first-time pass.” With these new limits in place, it’s more important than ever that we:

  • Communicate: Talk to me before you book or move a test.
  • Be Ready: Only book a date if we are confident you’ll be at test standard by that time.
  • Be Decisive: Since you only get two “mulligans,” we need to be sure about the time and location before hitting that confirm button.
