End of the Road for Unofficial Driving Test Booking Services: What You Need to Know

Are you currently navigating the frustrating world of booking your practical driving test? With record waiting times and a massive backlog, getting a slot has felt like winning the lottery. Unfortunately, this desperation has led to a rise in third-party “touts” and bots buying up appointments and reselling them for profit. The good news? The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is finally putting their foot down and have changed the driving test booking rules – as of 12th May 2026, sweeping new rules have been introduced to put learners back in the driving seat when it comes to booking their tests.

Here is everything you need to know about the latest crackdown on unofficial driving test booking services.

The Crackdown on Third-Party Touts

The DVSA has recognised that the system was broken, with too many learners paying over the odds to secure a test date. Specifically, they have made it against the law for third parties – including unofficial test booking apps, cancellation finder services, and even driving instructors – to make bookings on someone else’s behalf.

It is now a strict breach of the DVSA’s terms and conditions for any third party to change, swap, or cancel a driving test for another person. Crucially, this means that you are now completely in control of your own booking, making the system much fairer for genuine learners who are ready to take their test.

Key Changes to the Driving Test Booking Rules

To help stop the exploitation of learner drivers, the DVSA is rolling out a few major changes. Remember, staying informed is the best way to protect yourself and your wallet. Here are the main updates:

  • You Are in Control: Only you, the learner driver, can book and manage your practical driving test using the official GOV.UK portal.
  • Pay Only the Official Fee: You should never pay more than the standard DVSA rate. In reality, a test costs just £62 on weekdays, and £75 for evenings, weekends, and bank holidays. If a website asks for more, steer clear.
  • Stricter Centre Limits: Coming into force on 9 June 2026, you will be limited to moving your test only to one of the three driving test centres closest to your original booking location. For example, this will deter bots and scammers from booking slots in random locations where they have no intention of taking the test.
  • Fewer Changes Allowed: Building on rules introduced in March 2026, you are still limited to making a maximum of two changes to your test appointment.

More Examiners, Shorter Wait Times

This government crackdown isn’t just about stopping unofficial booking services. Because the DVSA wants to reduce wait times further, they have massively boosted testing capacity.

They have hired extra staff, bringing the number of full-time driving examiners to 1,604 – the highest level since 2018. They have even deployed military driving examiners to help clear the backlog across the country. The results are already showing, with nearly 2 million tests delivered over the past year and more learners passing than ever before!
